When two conductors are separated by a distance, they can
store a charge, which means that any two wires in a wiring harness can also
store a charge. This stored charge can affect how the cable behaves.
Capacitance is the ability of two conductors, separated by insulation, to store
a charge. This capacitance is affected by the distance between the conductors,
and the insulation around the conductors. As the distance between two conductors
is reduced, or if they have more surface area with longer wires, the
capacitance will increase.
Capacitors and their
applications
When the application in which wiring harnesses are to be
used is an aircraft, it is very important to also consider whether the aircraft
is equipped with high reliability capacitors. High reliability capacitors are
used in extreme applications like defense industries, space industries,
military industries, and emergency services. All these industries and
applications have a demanding nature, which makes it very important to ensure
that every aspect of the electronic equipment is reliable and upright. In
applications like aircraft control, aircraft power supply, aircraft analog
signal conditioning, etc., the failure of a capacitor may lead to shutdown of
the entire integrated system, which means huge losses and risks. Thus, just as
much as it is important to use aerospace grade wire harnesses,
it is also equally imperative to ensure that high reliability capacitors are
used in such applications.
Types of capacitors:
There are two types of capacitors that are considered
appropriate for use in such high-risk applications, namely multi-layered
ceramic capacitors, and polymer or tantalum capacitors.
Multi-layered ceramic capacitors – These are ideal
for space applications, utilized specifically when a device needs higher capacitance
and additional energy storage capabilities. They are installed individually in
the input and output filters for power supplies, or may be integrated in
capacitor banks. The most common configurations for multi-layered ceramic
capacitors include the S-lead, finger L-lead, solid J-lead, and thru-hole.
However, the leaded configurations can be customized as per their application
requirements. Moreover, the number of layered capacitors can also be adjusted,
depending upon the required power supply.
Polymer or tantalum capacitors – These are ideal for
defense industries as they offer high volumetric efficiency in a compact
containment. So, they are ideal when high capacitance is required in a smaller
area. Due to this property, the components are known for their ease of access
and reliability, and have the highest assurance of reliability for applications
where failure can be extremely critical or harmful.
Miracle Aerospace
assistance:
So,
when you have an application in the defense, military, aerospace, or emergency
industries, make sure you choose high reliability capacitors. You can get in
touch with Miracle Aerospace, a reliable aerospacewiring harness manufacturer in India, who can assist you with information
on capacitors too. This is because they have an experience – an experience of
testing their wiring harnesses; and when wiring harnesses are tested, the wires
behave like a capacitor. Capacitance becomes extremely important during a HiPot
test when high voltage is applied between two wires. Higher the voltage and
capacitance, high the charge and energy. Extremely high electrical energy could
be disastrous. Thus, the electrical energy of the wires is safely discharged
after the HiPot test, bringing the voltage back to zero, and eliminating the risk
of a shock.
